MacWhisper & Whisper Transcription Difference

Overview

MacWhisper is available in two versions:

• MacWhisper (Direct Download) – Available via Gumroad.
• Whisper Transcription – Available on the Mac App Store and iOS App Store.

While both versions share the same core functionality, some advanced features are exclusive to the direct download version.

Direct Download (MacWhisper)

• Allows dictation into any text field on your Mac
• Can detect meetings and offer to start recording
• Access to all AI providers
• MDM support for IT departments
• Bulk discounts for larger license purchases

App Store Version (Whisper Transcription)

• Fewer integrated AI provider options due to App Store restrictions
• Subscription options available (weekly, monthly, yearly)

iOS Version

• Free to use all local models
• Optional subscription for assistance features (cloud transcription, AI summary/chat)
• Users can add their own API key for AI features without a subscription

Direct Download (Gumroad)

• One-time Lifetime License: Personal license for all features
• Volume Licenses: 5, 10, or 20-license packs
• Student/Journalist/Nonprofit Discount: 30% off on request
• License Key Activation: Only valid for the direct download version

App Store

• In-app Purchases:
  • Weekly / Monthly / Yearly subscription
  • Optional Assistant Subscription (see below)
• No license key input field: App Store version does not support external license keys

Assistant Subscription

• Cloud-based transcription using our servers (e.g., ElevenLabs)
• Translate transcripts with AI
• Chat with AI about transcript contents
• Optional; users can also add their own API keys instead

Note: On iOS, there is no "Pro Unlock" — all local models are available without a purchase as well as the option to bring your own API key.
